Dexter

Dexter was still prone on the ground, minutes after Jack had left with Lily in the back of a car filled with other children. The wind was harsh as it circled Dexter’s frozen form. It may have been nearing midday, but the chill was something even the UK had never seen. Or maybe it was just Dexter’s cold mind projecting the temperature onto his body.

Dexter tried to get up, but his legs collapsed again.

What the hell’s wrong with me? Dexter thought, mentally slapping himself. I should never have…

But the thoughts raging in his mind could never quell the guilt squeezing his heart to a pulp.

And I told her it was an adventure, he internally cried. Why?

A voice broke out behind him, but Dexter paid it no mind. He was wrought with worries; with stress he couldn’t deal with. That someone of his age wasn’t supposed to deal with. The pain of seeing dead bodies strewn across the streets. Of seeing death and destruction and crime grip London in a way he’d never seen before. Not even the London riots could compare to the chaos Dexter was living through.

I wish Mum was here, Dexter thought. I wish…even Dad. Someone…

“Dexter,” the same voice from earlier called.

Dexter turned his head, but the effort caused an ache to spike in his brain. He groaned and slumped back to staring at the grey concrete, before closing his eyes entirely.

“Dexter.” This time the voice was accompanied by a prod to the back.

“What?” Dexter growled into the ground. His lips were tarnished with gravel, but he didn’t wish to wipe it away. What was the point? He was dirty, wasn’t he? A sullied soul that had let his only sister go to hell, as an adventure.

“Dexter, get up.” It was Theo’s voice. Adrenaline shot through Dexter’s veins, and he rolled over until the grey sky stared back at him, coloured the same as the concrete.

“What. Is. It?” Dexter squeezed out, his lungs folding with every word.

“We need to get back. Just in case some more of them come.”

“And why would you care?”

A pause phased between them.

“What do you mean?”

“You…did nothing,” Dexter said. He planted a palm on the floor, ignoring the tiny crevices in the ground digging into his skin. He pushed, his arms aching at the movement, and got to his knees.

“I’ll help you up,” Theo said, coming closer.

“Shut up.” Dexter ignored Theo’s outstretched hand and pushed off one knee to get to his feet. He began swaying instantly, but grabbed a bin and steadied himself. The smell of rubbish hit him, but it paled in comparison to the trash standing before him.

“I’ll get you up,” Theo said. “You need some rest.”

“Don’t even touch me.”

“Why?” The confused look on Theo’s face sent anger coursing through Dexter.

“You…let your wasteman of a brother take Lily. How…how could you?” Tears surfaced in Dexter’s eyes, tears for his little sister, who’d be screaming in the back of a car about now. He wiped them away, quickly, before Theo could notice.

“I didn’t have a choice,” Theo said, edging closer with another step.
